Car

2016 Mazda Miata, Sport trim (base), Soul Red, Advanced Keyless Entry

Power

Intake

  • Corksport - They list tiny power gains up top
  • Mishimoto - They list a tiny bit of power gain down low

Do any of these offer weight savings? Is the sound nice?

Exhaust

Muffler

Stock muffler: 20.5 lbs.

The GoodWin/RoadsterSport mufflers mostly all work with both the long tube header and the stock header, but make sure to email them to confirm on the specific model.

Header/Midpipe

Tune

Drift Office knows the cars and does ECUTek.

  • ECUTek License - 350$
  • ECUTek Cable - 350$ - Bought
  • Initial tune of car - 375$ - Bought
  • Tuning for after the header arrives - 150$/hr, expected to only be 1 hour

Drivetrain

LSD

The only answer seems to be the Cusco RS model LSD-431-L15

  • Mazda Motorsports - Part # 0000-02-5505 - $1334 - Get it set up by ProParts - Bought

Bushings

  • Mazdaspeed Diff Bushing Inserts - Part # 0000-04-5901 - $125
  • Mazdaspeed Motor Mounts - Only needed for road racing, don't provide any value to autocrossers

Suspension

Shocks

  • Global MX5 Front Shocks - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-5616 - 1075$/each - Bought
  • Global MX5 Rear Shocks - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-5617 - 1075$/each - Bought
  • Front Top Hats - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-5260-FT - 250$/each - Bought
  • Rear Top Hats - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-5260-RR - 250$/each - Bought
  • Karcepts JRZ RS - $2425 through $3725 for the shocks, add more for springs + perches

Springs

For the Mazda Motorsports shock/spring setup, it uses 2.25" springs, 7" length. Standard setup seems to be 600/300 for rates.

  • Eibach Springs - 0700.225.0300/0600 (300/600 lbs/in) - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-8300-07 (300) and 0000-04-8600-07 (600), 70$/each - Bought 600/300
  • Hyperco zero-rate tender spring - 25$/each - Bought
  • Torrington Bearings - Not sure yet if we need it - 36$ for a set of 4

Waiting to figure out if I can use the proper longroad parts for the coupler between the two springs...

Swaybars

  • Global MX5 Front Torsion Bar 0.120" Wall - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-5342-02 - 128$ - Bought
  • Global MX5 Front Swaybar Arm Kit - Mazda Motorsports 0000-04-5342 - 496$ - Bought
  • Mazda Motorsports Rear bar - Proparts is working on it, ETA Aug-Sept timeframe
  • Karcepts Front Bar - 575$ (50$ off for buying both together)
  • Karcepts Rear Bar - 350$ (50$ off for buying both together) - Bought

Bushings

Ron indicates that he wants more camber than he can get now, so should probably do something here.

  • Karcepts front offset bushings - 1 degree of front camber - $99 - Bought
  • Mazda Motorsports/ProParts are working on an option. Available in the Sept timeframe.

Brakes

Calipers

Rotors

Stock rear rotor: 8.42 lbs

Wheels

  • 17x9 6ULs - 15.3 lbs/each - $229/each or Tungsten 245$/each, 3$/each for MX5 spacer ring - Bought Tungsten + Rings

There are a few other options for slightly lighter wheels for a lot more money, but it doesn't seem worth it to explore.

Tires

Some mention of trying 255/40/17 for the rears (I think Karwin is doing it?), but I like being able to flip front to rear, so I'll avoid that for now. Ron's also on Rival S's, which is going to make sharing setup info harder, unfortunately.

Other

Battery

Stock battery + tray + tiedown is 26.7 lb.

Maintenance

  • Oil Filter - Mazda Motorsports PE01-14-302A - $4.95
  • Oil Drain Plug Crush Washer - Mazda Motorsports 9956-41-400 - $0.70

Capacity is 4.4 qts with oil filter change. Mazda Synthetic w/Moly 0W20 recommended.

Interior

Seats

Stock seats are 33-34 lbs each with slider (measured from Ron's Club car, so Sport might be a bit less).

For STR, you can go down to 25 lb seats minimum, so potentially 8-9 lbs of savings per side. Maybe someday, but I rather like the stock seats...

Stereo

Upgraded the door speakers to JBL GTO629s. The stock speakers + brackets were only 0.7 lbs each, and the resulting combo with the JBLs is 2.4 lbs/each. Not ideal, but sounds much better.

Mirror

Homelink mirror install writeup

Radar Detector Mount

Where to get simple 12V line from over the windshield? Tap into the homelink line if I can get that installed maybe?

Notes

Keeping track of weight loss.

Alignment

Ride height measured at the pinch weld nearest the corner in question.

Suggested starting point:

  • Front: -3.0 Camber, max caster, 1/16" total toe out, 5" ride height
  • Rear: -2.7 Camber, 1/16" total toe in, 5.25" ride height (0.25" rear rake)

Front bar and rear bar start dead in the middle and go from there.

Suspension Settings

Rebound is red, Bump (compression) is blue. Front bar fully variable, rear bar has 5 holes.

Initial Settings

Ron gave me some initial settings to use for shocks/bars, and Jeff Cawthorne gave me initial tire pressures:

  • Front Shocks: 5 rebound, 5 bump
  • Rear Shocks: 5 rebound, 3 bump
  • Front Bar: Very middle
  • Rear Bar: Middle (3rd hole)
  • Front Tires: 30 psi
  • Rear Tires: 26 psi

What I'm Using

Low grip sites (Bremerton):

  • Front Shocks: 1 rebound, 4 bump
  • Rear Shocks: 5 rebound, 3 bump
  • Front Bar: 1/4 from full soft
  • Rear Bar: Middle (3rd hole)
  • Front Tires: 23 psi
  • Rear Tires: 22 psi
